Chinese Tea Ceremony
Official Union of Two Families
The Chinese wedding tea ceremony is a sacred, thousand-year-old ritual where newlyweds serve sweet tea to their elders as a formal expression of gratitude, filial piety, and the official union of two families

During the ritual, we will kneel before you and present a cup of sweet tea with both hands. This is our formal way of saying "thank you" for your lifelong love, guidance, and support, and our way of officially welcoming you as our parents and family.
After taking a sip of the tea, you are invited to share any words of blessing, wisdom, or advice with us. Traditionally, elders also present the newlyweds with red envelopes or heirloom jewelry to welcome them into the family fold.

Why Tea? Tea is a symbol of loyalty. Tea plant can only grow from a single seed, then grow, sprout and blossom, symbolizing the fidelity of a marriage and commitment.
Unfold the meanings of the Tradition
Linguistic Wordplay:Â The ingredients and specific teas chosen for the ceremony are based on Chinese homophones, where words that sound identical to blessings are used to manifest good fortune.

For instance, we put red dates in the teas as the sweetness symbolizes a happy union. Often lotus seeds are also added, as it sounds like "continuously bringing children!" They must be unpeeled, symbolizing a complete, unbroken marriage.
The moment of changing titles: In Chinese culture, you cannot casually call your partner's parents "Mom" or "Dad" before marriage.
Â
During the tea ceremony, as the bride hands the cup to her father-in-law and formally says, "Father, please drink tea," she is legally and culturally changing her title. It marks the exact psychological threshold where "your parents" officially become "our parents".
